In a devastating incident on Thursday, a speeding truck collided with a parked police patrol van in West Bengal's Howrah district, resulting in the tragic demise of two policemen, including a sub-inspector. The collision occurred during the early hours of Thursday on National Highway 16 in the Barunda area, falling under the jurisdiction of the Bagnan police station.
According to the Howrah Police Commissionerate, the speeding truck, en route to Howrah city, struck the police patrol van from behind before hastily fleeing the scene. The impact of the collision led to the immediate loss of sub-inspector Sujoy Das (45) and home guard Palash Samanta (31), both declared dead upon reaching a nearby hospital.
Meanwhile, the remaining three occupants of the patrol van, identified as driver Abu Bakar (28), home guard Sukhdev Biswas (25), and Alok Bar (26), were urgently transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for advanced medical treatment. Presently, they are under observation.
The Additional Director General (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) for South Bengal, Siddhi Nath Gupta, visited the accident site alongside Howrah (Rural) SP Swati Bhangalia, emphasizing the intensified search efforts to apprehend the driver responsible for the fatal collision.
